Village Leather Training Association (VLTA)

In Nepal, the traditional leather workers are the Sarki people who tan leather using forest herbs.  They are an occupational or low caste.  With the advent of plastics, their traditional skills are becoming less saught after, leading many Sarki families to became destitute.

VLTA is an income generation project that has identified an export market for bags made from this traditional leather.  VLTA designs leather goods, provides training in traditional leather tanning and bag production, and helps with marketing.

VLTA also provides training in using factory leather for the manufacture of shoes for the local market and assists trained producers in establishing their own enterprises.

This income generation project has greatly raised the standard of living and social status of many Sarki and other leather working families.
